Mariana Ito is a sculptor from São Paulo, Brazil, and currently based in Chicago, IL. Inspired by her family's diaspora from Japan to Brazil, she investigates the conditions of mass mobility and space compartmentalization. Through methods of appropriation and mimicry, Ito creates systems of translation to question the materialization of ideologies and political power in architecture and push materiality out of its pre-existent contexts. Combining fibers and fabrication processes, she distorts the legibility of historically charged symbolism in architecture and boundary-markers in space.

Mariana Ito is currently pursuing her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is expected to graduate in Spring 2027. Ito also explores a curatorial practice, where exhibition design and art administration are also ways of sculpting the conditions of viewing and organizing space. Her recent shows include: Cheek to Cheek, Comfort Station (2025), Chicago, IL, as a curator and artist; Manifestations, Haz Room, Chicago, IL (2025), co-curator and artist; Gyotaku, Japanese Cultural Association, Chicago, IL (2025); Art Bash, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL (2024); Expanded Surface, Display case, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL (2023); among others.
